On May 2, 2014, Banderites, rightwing soccer Ultras, and the Right Sektor fascist paramilitary sacked the Odessa Trade Union House and massacred 56 Odessan trade unionists that resisted the 2013-2014 Euro-Maidan coup d’tat.
Ukrainian trade unionists, communists, youth activists and anti-fascists were chased from the streets into the House of Trade Unions. Rightwing soccer fans, known as the Ultras, were bussed into the area by the post-coup government and scorched the building. Those inside the building had barricaded themselves in defense but had to jump out of the second story windows due to the fire. The Right Sektor fascist paramilitary and other followers of the Stepan Bandera ideology arrived with bats and small arms.
Many of those who jumped from higher stories broke their legs upon hitting the ground and were then assailed and unable to flee. At this time, at least 56 Odessans perished according to official numbers. One of those assassinated was student dissident Vadim Papura which shatters the illusion of democracy in Ukraine.
Within pre-2014 Ukraine, there existed former Soviet organizations including the Communist Party of Ukraine. Before being outlawed, the Communist Party of Ukraine was the third largest political force in the country, and the Party of Regions was the largest political party. In Ukraine today, only fascist and pro-fascist parties are allowed to exist. There is only one official news channel. The trade union movement has been de facto blocked from effectively operating.
